Glycemic Index Help

Which is worse for a diabetic: white bread or wheat bread?

I just visited a web site that said that wheat bread is worse for you then white bread if you are a diabetic. This makes no sense to me as I always thought it was the opposite. Is that true? Please list your source. Thanks. http://www.extendbar.com/diabetes/glycemic-index-chart.asp

  1. White Bread, it has more carbs in wheat break which results in higher blood sugars
  2. I really can't answer the question. When I was first diagnosed with diabetes I started reading labels. I found that there wasn't much difference in the carb counts in the two breads. After looking around and reading all labels I found a 'heart healthy' bread made by Sara Lee. The heart healthy bread contains 45 calories and only 9g carbs per slice. That is the bread I now eat. My understanding on the difference between the white and wheat bread is that it takes your body longer to process the wheat, thereby giving you more level readings without fast spiking and dropping. The carb counts are the same, but the sugars are different. It was confusing for me too, that's why I kept looking.
  3. white bread is worse. WHEAT bread, especially WHOLE wheat, is much better, as it contain more fiber, which helps slow the absorbtion of starch (flour), and thus keeps the blood sugar more even.
  4. According to my nutritionist wheat bread can be worse for a diabetic because most companies add sugars to the wheat. It is best to look at your labels before buying them. I was told to look at the total carbs minus any fiber and sugar alcohols (alcohols are usually Splenda, Equal etc.) The best bread to go for is usually your Rye and Pumpernickel Breads because they are a lower glycemic index than wheat or white bread and companies don't tend to add extra sugars to them. I recommend White-Wheat brand bread. It is usually lower in fat, sugars and better for you. (Also pay close attention to your Fats contained in the bread, no only can sugar be harmful to diabetics but the fat can be too.)
  5. Some wheat breads including whole wheat breads add molasses to give the bread a darker color. You have to read the ingredients and nutrition label on all packaged foods.
  6. white flour is worse for everybody. note i said flour.
  7. i love all the different answers... according to my dietician and the American diabetes association white and wheat bread have the same amount of carbs but all wheat products stay with you longer that is one reason wheat is always the better choice. im not sure on anyother facts but i know this is pretty accurate i also have proof of this in my carb counting book that i use for each meal.
