Why does Orange Juice have a low/medium glycemic index?
Diabetics can drink OJ with some sugar mixed in and it raises the blood sugar almost instantaneously. How could it have a low/medium GI?

- Because they're diabetic. People without it can handle the sugar.
- the answer is partially in your question. if there is sugar mixed in that instantly raises the GI/GL as sugar has one of the highest GI/GLs you can get. but its a good question because i always assumed OJ had a med/high GI and now that i've looked into it its as you say. it also has a GL of 9 for unsweetened juice. i guess that most juices on the market have added sugar in them so therefore are appropriate for hypo treatment.
- The carbs in orange juice (the natural sugars) have a slower effect on blood sugar levels than regular table sugar, so I guess that is why orange juice has a low GI but orange juice with sugar can raise blood sugar quickly.
