Glycemic Index Help

Has anybody heard the rumor about a man that got rid of his diabetes by eating ants?Maybe it was the chitin...

I heard this rumor a LONG time ago, could there be a scientific basis to this? Maybe ants, or specifically the ants he ate (if it is true) had a compound that helps, fights or cures diabetes. Ants, and for that matter, insects in general have CHITIN. This is dietary fiber that comes from animals. Shellfish also have chitin. Fiber is always good in the diet and for diabetics it is even better, because it usually lowers the GI (glycemic index) of the food in question, keeping blood glucose levels stable. I heard this rumor in th news, a long time ago. It was covered in a sensationalist manner, so this is probably not true. Nevertheless, the question is scientific and I am asking this question in a serious manner. Serious answers would be appreciated. Thank all of you.

  1. I think that it is highly possible. There are a lot of illnesses that can be cured or at least treated using natural/holistic ways. If I recall, it was also rumored that there is a flower in a rainforest (in some country) that can cure a certain type of cancer. One never knows. I believe that God gave us everything that we need to keep ourselves healthy. By destroying rain forests (and the like) we destroy possible cures for disease, and we also let lose horrible diseases on mankind (i.e. Ebola Hemorrhagic fever etc...) That's another topic, but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the chitin in ants could treat/cure diabetics. But that wouldn't be very profitable to pharmaceutical companies now would it???....
  2. Rumor indeed. It is nonsense.
  3. I think the rumour was garbled. Ants use to be used for treating Diabetes, but only for diagnosis. They gather around the urine of a man who has diabetes. They were probably attracted to the sugar.
  4. Never heard of that but cinnamon is suppose to help a lot.
  5. Never heard of that. I take 2 or 3 tablespoons of coconut oil a day and include plenty of butter and cod liver oil in my diet and after a year my blood sugar levels are normal now. Stay away from trans fats. http://www.coconutresearchcenter.org/
  6. just a rumor, sorry I think the only people "cured" are the ones who had stem cells transplanted into their pancreas, kickstarting the Islets of Langerhorn to start producing insulin again seriously
  7. No never heard that one. I don't know all that much about Type 2 diabetics but there is no cure for Type 1 you can control your blood sugars with insulin but it will not cure it.
