Glycemic Index Help

Obesity at all time highs - what happened, and what's to blame?

It seems that people are really suffering with the need to be at healthy weight, and I think the odds are against them. I started to really check out nutrition labels, read about carbs, glycemic index and glycemic loads, and it looks like the best diet to follow is one that mirrors what people with diabetes can eat. What do you think? After starting to pay attention to what was really in the foods I was eating, I actually got irritated at finding how much garbage is really in some of the foods I "used" to buy. I also find that it's hard to find products with good ingredients, low-carb, etc...anyone else find this a problem too?

  1. Each individual must take responsibility for his/her overall health, from diet, to exercise activity, to consistancy in these areas. Every you do or don't do, eat or don't eat, has a short and long term effort on your health.
  2. A diabetic diet is a sensible one. It's what I was put on when pregnant with gestational diabetes so it's good for unborn babies. It's the diet I was put on when I went to a counselor. It's pretty much what the old WW used to be and pretty much what the WW Core Plan is if followed properly. I think too much convenience has a lot to do with people being overweight today...fast food, convenience foods, modern conveniences that take away physical movement etc.
  3. America is fat!!!!!! It's the extra large portions we're served and it's what we're eating....fried foods, pizza, cordogs, sweets. Americans are too lazy to boil veggies and bake meats, it's easier to pop prepackaged foods in the microwave and chow down on cookies and pies! All you have to do is cut down your portions...instead of 8 cookies, have 2. Also, go outside and ride a bike or swim instead of sitting at your computer all day.
  4. Our love affair with food...period. We speak about obesity, diabetes etc. But what are we teaching ourselves. Eat 3- 6 times a day. Supersize me! You can't go anywhere without passing a McDonalds or Krispy Kremem. I never shop without stopping for a snack or a mocha choka latte yah yah. . Back in the day, our ancestors ate much less food and they did it less often. The concept of breakfast, lunch, dinner and in between snacks was just not possible. They had no access to a "Quickie Mart",Wolfgang Puck's, Krogers or drive thru window.Every morsel of food was planned and distributed for survival of the family or tribe. As I type this, my stomach is growling. Now I have a choice of either going to the fridge to relieve my "misery" or continue typing. I am going to continue typing because I know that I ate plenty of food yesterday. I am not going to eat again until 2:00 in the aftternoon. And when I do, I am going to feast on meat veggies, yogurt and pecans. Every morsel of food required planning. Eating a ,meal was necessary to work in the field or hunting. Now, we eat a meal at the computer or television, which, BTW, has a million channels. IWe eat too often and we glorify food. The waist is evidence of this.
