  1. The answer is the potato because, although glycemic index is important, unless you're a diabetic there are many other important nutritional indicators to consider for a healthy diet. A 100 gram potato portion - less than an average sized baked potato - has 391 mg of potassium, and other minerals, vitamins, and even a little protein. This link gives you a table showing the details: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/cgi-bin/list_nut_edit.pl 100 grams of sugar has 389 kcal Vs 93 for the same mass of potato, so since you wanted to compare equal caloric consumption, you'd have to eat 24 grams of sugar, or a little under an ounce, to equate to the calories in a 100 grams portion size of potato. In this 24 gram sugar portion you'd be looking at a whole lot of zeros in almost every positive nutritional category. This link - http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/cgi-bin/list_nut_edit.pl shows the values for 100 grams of sugar, which is still basically zeros across the board except for, well, sugars.
